Melanoma

a melanoma is a malignant skin tumor which can arise form an existing mole or form normal, healthy skin. In recent years, the number of melanoma cases has increased at an alarming rate. Although melanoma is 100% curable if detected in time, many patients die from this type of skin cancer (often young!) It is estimated that in Europe and the United States, every year about 1 million skin tumors are diagnosed. 1 of every 100 of these skin cancers is a malignant melanoma.

Keep an eye on your skin

With the help of a video camera, our mole mapping machine establishes an exact mole “map” which helps the doctor localize every mole. Moles that require closer attention are individually photographed using digital technology along with a skin microscope. This procedure significantly increases the accuracy of diagnosing melanoma. The images are stored on electronically and in this way comparisons can be made between earlier mole images and the most recent ones. In this way, even the smallest changes will be detected!

The Melanoma A-B-C-D Rule

This Rule Can be used for the evaluation of a mole. Moles that fulfill one of the points of this rule should be observed by your doctor.
A – Asymmetry.
B – Border
(irregular, blurred or jagged edges)
C – Colour Variation.
D – Elevation (especially if uneven)

Every alteration is an alarm signal!

Watch for the following changes in your moles:

  • Changes in colour (including darkening, loss of colour, or the appearance of multiple colours such as blue, red, white, pink, purple or gray)
  • Diffuse edges.
  • Decreasing or increasing size/thickness.
  • Changes in the area surrounding moles (e.g. reddening, swelling or sores)
  • Itchiness or an odd sensation in moles.
  • A bleeding mole.
  • New moles (especially ones that appear after age 25)
