What is Skin Cancer?
And why should you do regular self-examination of your skin and moles? – The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends regular (monthly) self-examination to detect any changes in your skin and to aid in the early detection of skin cancer. However you should always check with your doctor if more frequent examinations are required.
Combined with annual examinations by your doctor, self-examinations of your skin and moles are simply the best way to prevent skin cancer.
You should also teach your children how to do self-examinations and encourage them to do this monthly. We have attached a Self-Examination Chart to this post which you can download by clicking on this link.
Remember that before you start your self-examination “program” it would be a good idea to let your doctor do a thorough examination of your skin. This will ensure that any skin spots or moles are “normal”. Read more about how mole mapping can help with the early detection and prevention of skin cancer here.
